The Coppola Building

Acrylic on Canvas
36" x 24"
c. 1985

This painting was created in the early 1980s from a photograph taken by Leonard, possibly a few years before. It looks south down Columbus Street, just before Montgomery Street, just past Broadway. The triangular-shaped building that is the focus was then owned by Francis Ford Coppola and Zoetrope Productions was located there. The 1913 building actually had many names during its history: The Flatiron, Columbus Tower, Sentinel, Coppola's Cupola. Locally referred to as The Coppola Building. It was once owned by The Kingston Trio. The Chinatown Holiday Inn building in the background was under construction. You can see the Pyramid Building on the left.

The original painting was sold a number of years ago and is in a private collection.
